About this book
Mission from Cape Coast Castle to Ashantee presents a statistical account of the kingdom and geographical notices concerning other parts of the interior of Africa. The journey account describes Fousou as formerly a large town, destroyed by the Ashantee invasion of 1807 and reduced to a few sheds where traders deposited yams and plantains for their return. The march on the next morning, the 29th of April, covers seven miles to Ancomassa, described as half a dozen sheds reached by a rugged path.
The account of domestic fetishes describes objects furnished by priests, including wooden figures and objects of arbitrary shapes and materials, which receive offerings and libations at the yam custom. The ceremonial visit includes an exchange of compliments between the Governor and the King, followed by the sound of drums, horns and flutes.
