About this book
An overcoat and a hat reassure a narrator whose sense of himself changes from day to day. Logan Pearsall Smith builds these brief prose pieces from such small encounters between ordinary life and unruly thought. A walk through London, a crowded bus, a reflection in a shop window or a parcel containing an hourglass can lead to meditations on identity, time and the habits of polite society.
The voice is observant, fanciful and quick to expose its own pretensions. A greeting becomes an exercise in studying human behaviour; a conversation about charm falters when someone mentions the revealing state of people's boots. Elsewhere, unread Polish poets inspire an exaggerated sense of guilt, while a stranger asking directions prompts a dream of a lost paradise.
