Murder in the Maze
On a hot afternoon the wealthy Shandon twins, Roger and Neville, are found dead at the heart of a great hedge maze, each struck down by a poisoned dart. With two nearly identical victims and a killer who could vanish among the winding paths, the case baffles everyone until Chief Constable Sir Clinton Driffield takes charge, aided by his genial friend Squire Wendover. This was the first of Connington’s Driffield mysteries, and it shows the author, a working chemist in real life, delighting in the practical detail of poisons, alibis, and physical clues. Ingenious and briskly plotted, it is a fine example of Golden Age detective fiction. Read it free in this PDF and EPUB edition.
