About this book

My Fight for Irish Freedom is a book by Dan Breen, with an introduction by Joseph McGarrity of Philadelphia. The introduction describes the book, by Commandant General Dan Breen of the Third Tipperary Brigade, as a story written in the plain unaffected language of one of Ireland's bravest and most devoted sons. The text tells of one of the Misses Meagher, who had slipped out unnoticed by the police to give warning, whispering that the peelers are inside, raiding.

The text says the writer and colleagues produced a proclamation ordering all British armed forces to leave South Tipperary under penalty of death, and that although Headquarters had refused their sanction they decided to publish it. The text says the writer and companions determined to ambush a party at a spot half a mile on the Tipperary side of the village of Oola. The text says the writer's group expected the military car to arrive from Limerick about 10.30 a.m., and that a few minutes before that time they felled a tree across the road to block their path. The text promises its readers the first authentic account of the affair known as The Soloheadbeg Outbreak.
