About this book

My Hildegarde is a book by St. George Rathborne. The narrator feels almost certain that Hildegarde would utterly refuse to accept a refuge on board his yacht, so great had been the antipathy she had shown at mention of such a thing. The narrator says Carmencita did her part well and seemed to be constantly alert for signs of danger.

The narrator calls braving the anger of the alcalde, who as judge and mayor might yet have the chance to condemn them, a serious thing. The narrator says Hildegarde was suffering and that it made his heart bleed to realize his utter helplessness to assist her. The narrator describes a garden with colored lanterns hung here and there, a scene of enchantment, with music stealing from some concealed orchestra within the house.
