My Mamie Rose

My Mamie Rose is the 1903 autobiography of Owen Kildare (1864-1911), the Bowery-born writer who told how he rose from illiteracy and the New York slums to authorship through the love of a young woman who taught him to read. Billed as the autobiography of a reformed tough, the book was a sensation and was dramatised on Broadway. It is a vivid first-hand document of the Bowery underworld at the turn of the century.
