About this book

Myths of Hellas gathers Greek tales about gods and heroes. C. Witt, head master of a gymnasium at Königsberg, wrote them in German, and Frances Younghusband translated them into English with the author's sanction. Arthur Sidgwick supplies a preface, and the translator dedicates the book to English children. This is the fifth edition, printed in London in 1891.

The stories include Zeus fighting the giant Typhoeus with thunderbolts until Gaea throws him into Tartarus, and a Golden Age under Cronus when it is always springtime and fruit grows wild. Another passage tells of King Athamas, his children Phrixus and Helle, and their step-mother. The book also has the Quest of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece, and Heracles, whom men honour as a god and build temples to. An index lists figures such as Laomedon, the Lapithae and Leda.
