This narrative records the life of Paul Cuffe (1759-1817), the African American and Wampanoag sea captain, merchant, and abolitionist who became one of the wealthiest men of color in the early United States. Cuffe built a shipping fortune, fought for Black voting rights in Massachusetts, and led an early effort to resettle free African Americans in Sierra Leone. His narrative is a primary document of early Black American achievement and the colonization debate. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
