About this book
The account of the islands describes a compulsory education law drawing every child into school, with a special tax on voters and an additional general tax providing schools and teachers. The account says that almost every Hawaiian of suitable age, whether man, woman or child, can both read and write. The discussion of persecution of the Chinese maintains that people who earn their bread do not take part in that persecution.
Kawelo asks his mother how he can succeed in marrying a proud princess and requests her counsel. Kawelo's mother advises readiness for labor and skill in fishing as the only secret of making a good match.
