About this book
Nostalgia is by Grazia Deledda, translated by Helen Hester Colvill. On Christmas Eve Regina went early to bed, complaining of an indisposition that made Signora Anna thoughtful but was not suggestive to Antonio. Antonio knew, or thought he knew, the subtle malady that was consuming his wife, and knew its name: Nostalgia. Regina remembers Christmas in Rome, seeing again the carts of live fowls being drawn through the streets.
Antonio goes to the Princess about the collection of her rents, and the Princess invites him and his wife to dinner on Sunday. The dinners are described as served by pompous men servants, whose solemnity, said Antonio, spoiled his digestion, but Regina found the entertainments dull and came away out of temper.
