About this book
Questions from university students give these short religious notes their starting point. Ahmed Hussain first sent them in weekly letters to his brother and sons, explaining his understanding of Islam and encouraging them to think and argue for themselves. Collected and edited by Khaja Muhammad Hussain, the volume opens with the Muslim prayer and an analysis of the Qur'an's first chapter, arranging its ideas around the nature of God, human duties and the right path.
Hussain connects religious belief with scientific thought, including evolution, and considers the relationship between Islam and other faiths. Later discussions turn to self-development, perseverance and moderation, with comparisons drawn from moral philosophy. His personal interpretation gives readers a compact example of religious reasoning that moves between scripture, ethical questions and the scientific ideas of his time. The family setting also makes the essays an exchange about how belief can guide thought and conduct.
