Old Calabria, by Norman Douglas, has contents that list cave-worship, a mountain festival, brigandage, malaria and memories of Gissing among its subjects. The account of Joseph of Copertino says that his fame spread beyond Italy to France, Germany and Poland during the time of the Spanish viceroys.
The narrator describes a civic museum with two rooms whose exhibits are smothered in dust and cobwebs. The woman caring for the museum says that a catalogue is unnecessary and that she knows everything, and identifies the objects as discoveries from Stromboli. A man asked about children says that all are dead, while his answer about grandchildren identifies them as emigrants.
