Old Celtic Romances is the 1879 classic in which Patrick Weston Joyce (1827-1914), the Irish historian and music collector, translated the great medieval Irish tales into plain Victorian English. Here are the Children of Lir, the pursuit of Diarmuid and Grania, and the voyage of Maildun, the story that gave Tennyson his Voyage of Maeldune. The book opened Irish saga literature to ordinary readers decades before the Celtic Revival made it fashionable, and it remains one of the friendliest doors into the tradition.
