Old Crosses and Lychgates is by Aymer Vallance. A section headed Unclassified Varieties says it is not easy to devise a system for the classification of crosses which shall, without loss of precision, be both exhaustive enough and comprehensive enough to embrace every possible variety. The text says there is hardly scope for any very great variety of types in lychgates, but they may be classified generally under certain main groups.
The text names a lychgate at Berrynarbor, Devonshire, that is on the plan of a cross. The text says the village cross at Harringworth, Northamptonshire, has a shaft composed of a cluster of eight engaged columns, and is apparently of late thirteenth-century date. A numbered list names market crosses at Glastonbury, Cheddar and Somerton, all in Somersetshire, among others.
