Old Firehand und andere Erzählungen is a German-language story collection by Karl May (1842-1912), the German popular novelist whose Western and Oriental adventure novels were the most widely read German fiction of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and have shaped the German cultural image of the American West to the present day. May created the Apache chief Winnetou and his German blood-brother Old Shatterhand in a long series of novels set in an imagined American West that May himself only visited very briefly late in life. Old Firehand is one of the recurring frontiersman characters in May’s American cycle and appears in several of the early stories that the present collection gathers. The book is a primary source for the German Western literary tradition that influenced Karl Kraus, Hermann Hesse, and Ernst Bloch among many later German writers.
