About this book
The preface recalls a journey into northwestern Montana in the spring of 1896 as a member of a Government expedition appointed by President Cleveland. The expedition’s stated purpose was to recommend a national policy for the United States Forest Reserves and advise on reserving certain other forests. White Calf and Mad Wolf are described as longstanding friends living near each other on Cutbank River, with families that frequently visited one another.
The calendar of moons gives seasonal names connected with wind, snow, birds, river ice and changes in plants. The narrator describes joining the Raven Song with the beaver men, imitating raven calls and closely following Mad Wolf’s movements with the rattles.
