About this book

Operas Every Child Should Know offers descriptions of the text and music of some of the most famous operas. The foreword says the editor's greatest difficulty was deciding what to leave out, and a transcriber's note explains that links play a midi file of the music. The frontispiece shows Brunnhilde the Valkyrie.

The stories are retold with dialogue and song lines. In one, gipsies crowd around a dandy named Florestein and take his rings and chains until their queen steps in, makes them return the things and takes him along with her. Arline tells Thaddeus of a strange dream in which she dwelt in marble halls. Another retelling is set aboard a ship, where a captain's daughter, Josephine, rushes into the arms of Ralph, a sailor, and Sir Joseph asks about the dreadful language he has heard. In a further passage a man tells a king that he became guardian of Elsa and Gottfried after the Duke's death.
