Past Tense is the twenty third Jack Reacher novel from Lee Child, published in 2018. The book has one of the more atmospheric setups in the late series. Reacher, in his usual aimless travel mode, decides to make a detour through the small New Hampshire town where his late father grew up. He has never been there. He wants to see the place once before he never thinks about it again. What he finds is that the town has no record of any Reacher family, ever. The father he knew might not have been from the place his identification documents say he was from.

While Reacher is poking around the town and the local historical society, the novel intercuts with a parallel storyline about a young Canadian couple, Patty Sundstrom and Shorty Fleck, whose car has broken down at a remote motel deep in the New Hampshire woods. The motel staff are unusually unhelpful in a way that escalates from inconvenient to disturbing as the days pass. The reader can see what Patty and Shorty cannot, which is that something is very wrong at this motel and that Reacher’s casual investigation in town is going to have to intersect with their situation before any of them can leave.

The family history thread gives Past Tense an unusual emotional weight for a Reacher novel. Lee Child rarely lets his protagonist sit still long enough to think about his own past, and the question of who Reacher’s father actually was, and what the small town silence means, is one of the few times the series engages directly with Reacher’s interior life. The second thread builds the kind of slow building dread that thrillers like this depend on, with the motel set piece moving toward a confrontation that delivers the violence the reader has been bracing for.

For longtime Reacher fans, Past Tense is one of the more satisfying late entries. For new readers, it works as a standalone but rewards some prior familiarity with the series.
