Pelle the Conqueror
Across four volumes, Martin Andersen Nexo traces the life of Pelle, a poor Swedish boy who crosses the sea to the Danish island of Bornholm with his aging father, Lasse, hoping for something better than the farm work they left behind. Pelle grows up herding cattle, apprenticing as a shoemaker, and slowly waking to the injustice around him, until he becomes a leader in the young Danish labor movement. Nexo knew this world from the inside, and he writes about hunger, work, and solidarity without sentimentality or false comfort. The result is one of the great socialist novels of European literature, later brought to a wider audience by Bille August’s Oscar-winning film. Free to read here in PDF and EPUB.
