Pictures of German Life in the XVIIIth and XIXth Centuries is the English translation of part of Bilder aus der deutschen Vergangenheit, the multi-volume cultural history of the German people by Gustav Freytag (1816-1895), the German novelist, journalist, and editor of Die Grenzboten. Freytag was one of the leading liberal national writers of nineteenth-century Germany; his novel Soll und Haben became a best-seller of the 1850s, and his Bilder gave the educated German reading public a vivid social history of their own past. This English selection covers the eighteenth and nineteenth century volumes, with chapters on the courts and small states, the rise of the burgher class, the universities, the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon, and the development of German national feeling.
