About this book
Alexander Wynter Blyth wrote this book on poisons, their effects and detection, and its front pages advertise the author's Foods: Their Composition and Analysis. One section sorts alkaloids by chemical tests: how a solution reacts to platinum chloride, sulphuric acid and Fröhde's reagent, with colour changes and names such as emetine, coniine, nicotine, sparteine and aniline.
Another passage reports a case at Keighley in which a mechanic aged 42 was believed to have been harmed by lead in the town water. Mr. Allen found about three fifths of a grain of lead per gallon, and Dr. Tidy, called as an expert, gave a guarded opinion. A further passage describes an experiment with nitro-benzene vapour and its effects on breathing.
