About this book
Private Peat, credited to Harold Reginald Peat, carries the caption Still smiling though his right arm is useless. The foreword describes the book as a record of experiences as a private in the great war, with the emphasis put on the things that seemed important to the writer. The foreword's writer says the aim was a book of smiles, but the seriousness of it all came back and crept into the pages.
A call goes out for all the men who have had former military experience to fall out, and the report is that about six hundred stayed. The chaplain is said to carry in his heart the comfort for the man who is facing eternity. The text says wars are always women's wars, mothers' wars. Advice is given not to think of the sorrow of his leaving, but to think of the pride of his going.
