About this book
Privateers and Privateering is a book by Edward Phillips Statham. The preface says the volume does not pretend to be a history of privateering, but is a collection of true stories of privateering incidents, and heroes of what the French term “la course”. The writer says it is an axiom of international law that, when two nations are at war, every subject of each is at war with every subject of the other.
The writer says Sir Travers Twiss, a high authority, lays down that a merchant vessel attacked by one of the enemy's men-of-war, if strong enough to turn the tables, would be entitled to make a prize of her. The text describes a small vessel, the King David, mounting two guns with a crew of thirty-six, in which Bart soon showed himself to be a bold and capable captain, and in four or five months captured six prizes. The index lists entries for Barton, John, father of Andrew, and Barton, Robert, brother of Andrew.
