About this book
Rashi is a book by Maurice Liber. The introduction says that a people honors itself in honoring the great men who have interpreted its thought, who are the guardians of its genius. The introduction says no people has greater need than the Jews to steep itself again in the sources of its existence.
The text says that the man it discusses was frequently consulted in regard to the meaning of Biblical passages, and that one response has been preserved, that given to the scholars of Auxerre. The text says the Jews were almost the only persons versed in the Bible, men of education making it their duty to copy the Bible with the most scrupulous care. A note names Isaac ben Menahem, another rabbi of Orleans, who was older than Rashi, and says there is nothing to prove, as Gross maintains, that Rashi was his pupil.
