About this book
The title page reads Rat Race by George O. Smith, illustrated by Cartier. Brannon tells Peter Manton that the best priority in the world isn't going to buy a dozen mousetraps that are nonexistent. Peter hung up unhappily, saw an impertinent mouse sitting on the floor, and hurled a book at it. A mouse finds a small wire tunnel closed at the far end, with a rancid bit of bacon hung there, and inspects the wire tunnel carefully.
A clerk says the Better Mousetrap is on a rental basis, with a register that counts the catch, and that you pay two cents per catch. One explanation says the master of the place goes out and rents one of the Better Mousetraps, and during the time it is there it hurls mice backward in time to create the plague.
