About this book
Recollections of Captain Wilkie is subtitled A Story of an Old Offender. The narrator, bound for a holiday that is to replace the dull routine of the hospital wards with the gayeties of Paris, watches a companion in the second-class carriage of the London and Dover Railway and wonders who he can be.
The narrator studies the quiet middle-aged man in front of him, noting that there is no callous in the palm and no thickness at the joints, and that the hands are very white, with blue projecting veins and long, delicate fingers. The man tells of a rather curious incident in his career: he had made a rather good haul and invested some of the swag in buying a very fine diamond ring. The man's story has the colonel’s silver fused into a solid lump before midnight; the narrator laughs at the versatility of the old scoundrel, and the man answers that it is always the daring game which succeeds best.
