About this book

A disagreement over a school timetable quickly becomes a contest of authority in Clemence Dane's 1917 novel. Clare Hartill waits for her class while the secretary, Henrietta Vigers, blames the new teacher, Miss Durand. Their conversation reveals a staff divided by professional pride, old resentments and rival ideas of proper conduct. Classroom details, from inky desks to silkworm trays, give the school a busy, tangible setting.

Behind those ordinary routines, the story examines how much power a teacher's approval can hold. Louise urgently asks Clare whether her performance pleased her, only to meet impatience and dismissal. That exchange brings the school's emotional pressures into sharp focus.
