About this book

Renaissance Fancies and Studies is by Vernon Lee and is described as a sequel to Euphorion. The preface says that the essays are mainly the outcome of direct personal impressions of certain works of art and literature, and of the places in which they were produced. The text says that Héloïse and Abélard were not merely among the finest intellects of the Middle Ages, and were both, in different ways, to the highest degree passionately innovating natures.

The writer thinks of Signorelli's Resurrection in a chapel far off on the windswept Umbrian rock, and finds in that simply treated fresco an imaginative suggestion far surpassing this of Tintoret's. The text says that there are some more things, and more important, still to be said from the reader's standpoint rather than the writer's, about the influence on our lives of the Past and of its art, and more particularly of the vague period called the Renaissance.
