Retrospect and Prospect, an Address is an occasional address by James Drummond (1835-1918), the Unitarian biblical scholar and Principal of Manchester New College, Oxford. Drummond led Manchester New College through its transfer from London to Oxford in the 1880s, where it became the chief training institution for English Unitarian and liberal Nonconformist ministry. The address looks back on the College’s history and forward to its mission in the new Oxford setting, and gives a portrait of the late-Victorian Unitarian intellectual world that produced figures such as L.P. Jacks and Estlin Carpenter. Drummond’s own scholarship on Philo and on the Fourth Gospel made him one of the leading liberal Christian academics of his generation. The address is a useful primary source for the history of English Unitarianism. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
