About this book
The book is Roman Antiquities, and Ancient Mythology; for classical schools, by Charles K. Dillaway, principal of the public Latin school in Boston. The preface says the editor has endeavored in the following pages to give some account of the customs and institutions of the Romans and of ancient Mythology in a form adapted to the use of classical schools.
The text says the Senate was summoned anciently by a public officer, named viator, because he called the Senators from the country. Chapter III is headed Terrestrial Gods and says SATURN was the son of Cœlus and Titæa or Terra, and married his sister Vesta. The text says that, as the Greeks always carried the encomiums of their great men beyond the truth, they feigned that Æsculapius was so expert in medicine, as not only to cure the sick, but even to raise the dead.
