About this book
A soldier's recollections shape William Taylor's account of the British expedition into Afghanistan. His preface, dated December 1842, explains that he worked from memory and sought to describe his experiences without entering party disputes. The opening follows military preparations in Bombay in 1838, the troops assigned to Sir John Keane, and a march from Kirkee through the mountain roads of the Ghauts. An accident with a loaded gun brings the risks of camp life into the narrative early.
The contents trace the army's route through passes and towns to Candahar, Ghuznee and Cabul, alongside observations of local customs, transport and supplies. At Ghuznee, Taylor includes engineering reports describing unexpectedly strong walls, towers and a water-filled ditch. These practical details offer readers a view of how a soldier remembered the campaign and how its officers assessed the obstacles before them.
