Commercial ambition and fear of bankruptcy lead an unnamed merchant into the prison system in this memoir, published in 1869 and edited by Frank Henderson. The opening traces his business difficulties through failed ventures, an overseas partnership and financial arrangements he hoped would preserve his standing. His account links the loss of freedom to the collapse of credit and reputation, giving his personal history a strongly commercial perspective.
The account moves through prison hospitals, meals, work, religious observance and conversations among prisoners. The narrator challenges the idea that compliance with prison rules demonstrates sound character or readiness for release. He also questions the selection of prisoners sent abroad and considers their prospects after confinement.
