This Sketch of Bishop Atticus G. Haygood is a 1915 biographical memoir of the Georgia Methodist leader Atticus Greene Haygood (1839-1896), president of Emory College and later a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Haygood startled the post-war South with his 1880 Thanksgiving sermon The New South and his book Our Brother in Black, which urged white Southerners toward education and fair dealing for Black citizens, and he administered the Slater Fund for Black schooling. The sketch, prepared by George B. Winton from conference memorial material, preserves the outline of an unusual Southern career. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
