Big Jerry Webb found her in the woods at three years old, alone, her parents drowned in the river below. He raised the child as his own granddaughter, and the settlement took to calling her Smiles. Years later Donald MacDonald, a Boston doctor who cares for sick children, loses his way hunting in the border Cumberlands and knocks at their cabin door. Rose decides she wants to train as a nurse, Big Jerry cannot bear the thought of losing her, and a jealous neighbor named Judd Amos turns the hollow dangerous. Robinson carries the story from the ridges to a city hospital ward, then through the war that sends MacDonald to France while Rose stays behind to finish her training. The Page Company published it in 1919 and reprinted it ten times within two years.
