About this book
Soil Culture is a book by J. H. Walden, described as containing a comprehensive view of agriculture, horticulture, pomology, domestic animals, rural economy, and agricultural literature. The volume is dedicated to the practical cultivators of the soil, the true lords of the manor.
The text on the apple-worm says that the insect lays its egg in the blossom-end of the young apple, and that apples so affected will fall prematurely and should be picked up and fed to swine. The text says that bonfires, for a few evenings in the fore part of June, in an orchard infested with moths, will destroy vast numbers of them, before they have deposited their eggs. A section on gypsum, or plaster of Paris, says that its fertilizing properties were discovered by a German laborer in a quarry, who observed the increased luxuriance of the grass by his path.
