About this book
Little 'Lisbeth Lillibun longs to live in London, a hundred miles from her home. While her brother Dickon notices flowers, bees and birds, she watches travellers disappear along the road and imagines following them. George Kringle's children's story begins among fields and families whose mothers work at the mill, where pretend trips can quickly turn into plans for a real expedition.
The London scenes set the attractions of street sights and a moving wax figure beside the discomfort of cramped rooms and difficult neighbours. 'Lisbeth finds pleasure in visiting three boys who make games from chairs, brushes and brooms. With a narrator who speaks directly to young readers, the story links sibling play and friendship to a clear lesson about contentment. Its small domestic scenes give readers a picture of children's amusements and the pressures of poverty.
