About this book
Halloween gives a band of young pranksters licence to unsettle their neighbours in Alexander Dick's comic verse. Recalling a celebration twenty years earlier, the speaker follows Jock, Tam and their companions through an evening of smoke, stolen cabbages, noisy windows and angry pursuit. Each household adds a fresh scene, with Hugh raging behind a tied door and Peggie's attempt at revenge catching the wrong passerby.
The poem's rhymes and regional vocabulary carry a quick succession of tricks and quarrels. Its humour rests on the widening gap between the lads' enjoyment and their neighbours' exasperation. A preface dated 1867 explains Dick's decision to publish after a Halloween poetry competition, questioning the judges' emphasis on suitability for a public festival. Readers interested in seasonal customs, comic verse and the language of everyday disputes will find a short account of festive disorder, with familiar streets turned into a running contest between households and mischief makers.
