State of the Union Addresses, credited to James K. Polk, gathers addresses dated from December 2, 1845 to December 5, 1848. One address says the duty of giving information of the state of the Union is performed for the first time, and congratulates its hearers on the continued prosperity of the country. Another address says an official answer was received that the Mexican Government consented to renew the diplomatic relations which had been suspended in March last.
A further address says that many weeks elapsed, and no overtures were made nor was any desire expressed by the Mexican Government to enter into negotiations for peace. An address speaks of the derangement of the currency and the pecuniary pressure which existed, the first the consequence of the War of the Revolution and the second the consequence of the War of 1812.
