State of the Union Addresses, credited to James Monroe, gathers addresses dated from December 12, 1817 to December 7, 1824. One address says that at no period of our political existence had there been so much cause to felicitate ourselves on the prosperous and happy condition of the country. Another address estimates that a balance of more than $6 millions will remain in the Treasury on the first day of January.
One address speaks of the progressive diminution of the public revenue in 1819 and 1820, which had been the result of the languid state of foreign commerce in those years. An address refers its hearers to the report of the Secretary of the Navy for detailed information on the state of the maritime force on each sea.
