About this book

State of the Union Addresses, credited to Millard Fillmore, gathers addresses dated December 2, 1850, December 2, 1851 and December 6, 1852. One address says the country was shrouded in mourning for the loss of its venerable Chief Magistrate and that all hearts were penetrated with grief. Another address says that without law there can be no real practical liberty, and that the law is the only sure protection of the weak and the only efficient restraint upon the strong.

An address calls the appointing power one of the most delicate with which the Executive is invested, and says it is regarded as a sacred trust. One address says that agriculture may justly be regarded as the great interest of the people, with four-fifths of the active population employed in the cultivation of the soil.
