About this book

State of the Union Addresses, credited to Rutherford Birchard Hayes, gathers addresses dated from December 3, 1877 to December 6, 1880. One address says that the pacification of the country must remain the most important of all national interests until it is fully accomplished. Another address holds that any wavering in purpose or unsteadiness in methods, in the transition from an irredeemable to a redeemable paper currency, would only tend to increased and prolonged disturbance in values.

An address speaks of the readjustment of the coinage system by the renewal of the silver dollar as an element in the specie currency, endowed by legislation with the quality of legal tender. One address speaks of the propriety of making provision for the erection of suitable fireproof buildings at the Japanese capital for the use of the American legation and the court-house and jail connected with it.
