About this book
State of the Union Addresses, credited to Zachary Taylor, contains an address dated December 4, 1849. The address says that sixty years have elapsed since the establishment of this Government, and that the United States of America at this moment present to the world the most stable and permanent Government on earth. The address says that relations with Great Britain are of the most friendly character, and that British vessels will, after the 1st day of January next, be admitted to entry in our ports.
The address calls it policy to encourage every practicable route across the isthmus which connects North and South America, either by railroad or canal. The address says the qualified veto will never be exercised except in the cases contemplated by the fathers of the Republic, and calls it an extreme measure.
