About this book
Steam Turbines by Hubert E. Collins is described on its title page as a book of instruction for the adjustment and operation of the principal types of this class of prime movers. The men on the wrench back off and the horseshoe shim supports the weight of the machine. The text says the flange is held securely in the base by eight 3/4-inch cap-screws.
Mineral oils that have been adulterated will partially decompose when heated up, forming acid. The text gives a very good and simple way to test for adulterations in oil: take up a quantity of the oil in a test tube with a solution of borax and water. One section describes a thorough test on a pump to ascertain its delivery at various speeds, in which a notched weir was employed.
