About this book
John Gregorson Campbell, Minister of Tiree, collected the material in Superstitions of the Highlands & Islands of Scotland entirely from oral sources, and the title page is dated Glasgow, 1900. Gaelic phrases stand in brackets beside the English, and an index lists fairies, the Glaistig, funerals and the Faroe Islands.
A passage on the defects of fairies says that a personal defect is ascribed to them, such as having only one nostril in Mull. The Glaistig of Coire-na-sheanchrach meets a poor fisherman each evening and gets a fish for herself, and in another story Neil is followed home by a voice begging for a fish. Hector, son of Ferchar, drives an old white mare away from his heather door, and she turns into a woman who laughs at him. Another tale tells of a young woman who learns to make cloth better than anyone around her and listens for a visitor's name.
