About this book
Surgical Instruments in Greek and Roman Times gives an account of the instruments with which ancient Greek and Roman surgeons practised their craft. The preface argues that descriptions of surgical operations require some previous knowledge of the instruments intended for use. The discussion of Aulus Cornelius Celsus describes a system of medicine in eight books and notes detailed descriptions of instruments.
The account describes a pocket companion combining toilet forceps, an ear-pick, and a nail-cleaner as a common museum object. The examination of epilation forceps includes a variety with rounded legs, several examples of which came from purely surgical finds.
