About this book
The book is a record of the services of a Royal Fusiliers battalion, called First Sportsman's, in the Great War, 1914-1919, by Fred. W. Ward. A Brigadier says the Battalion was in its infancy, deficient of arms and equipment, but full of men whose physique, zeal, and spirit were magnificent. The Brigadier also says that many hundreds of their best and bravest made the last sacrifice.
The book says that Mr. Brooks, the schoolmaster, sold his boots for tobacco and his socks for bread while in hospital. One account says, "Personally, I am hungry all day long," and "I bought about one-sixth of a loaf for seventeen cigarettes."
