About this book
In Granada, a secret courtship depends on letters and conversations through a barred window. Marina, a wealthy orphan, loves the young cavalry captain Don Alphonso, but her guardian Alonzo plans to marry her to his own son. The lovers prepare to escape to Portugal with a box of jewels. When Alphonso stops to defend two men from an attack, his delay leaves Marina facing a dark street and a costly mistake.
Florian's short Spanish tale follows the consequences of that disrupted meeting through searches, travel and unexpected changes of fortune. Its interest reaches beyond the romance into village life, where Marina gains the trust of the inhabitants and takes on the duties of a local magistrate. The contrast between a guardian's concern for wealth and the villagers' respect for good judgment gives readers another thread to follow alongside the lovers' troubles. Brisk reversals and gently comic portraits keep the story moving.
