Virgil’s epic follows him across the Mediterranean, through the doomed love of Dido in Carthage, down into the underworld, and into the wars that will plant the seeds of Rome. Written for the age of Augustus, the poem gave Rome its founding myth while quietly mourning the cost of empire and the price paid by the defeated.
