About this book
The Artillerist's Manual and British Soldier's Compendium by F. A. Griffiths gives instructions for battalions advancing, retiring and passing through other lines. The instructions for a battalion advancing in line to charge prescribe preparation, charging and halting. Companies may pass to the front or rear by sections of threes. The relieving battalion marches within twelve paces of the front line, whose companies proceed to the rear through the second line.
The equipment list includes levers, lever ropes, blocks and a sling whose length suits the gun or other object being slung. The geometrical instructions explain that a trapezium can be divided into triangles whose areas are added together. The rule for a trapezoid multiplies the sum of its parallel sides by their perpendicular distance and halves the product.
