About this book
Bells, mummers and a great ash log draw the people of Torksey into Sir Wilfrid de Thorold's hall for Christmas. Thomas Cooper's narrative poem imagines the ruined building beside the Trent alive again with guests, servants and music. The baron welcomes people across the social ranks, while his daughter and the household steward help prepare a feast whose abundance fills the verse.
The celebration also makes room for storytelling. A visiting minstrel offers a tale of Sir Raymond, a knight preparing to leave his newly married wife for the Holy Land. Food, song and remembered customs give the poem much of its texture, from the decorated boar's head to gifts for neighbours confined at home. Readers interested in Christmas traditions and nineteenth-century poetry will find a festive gathering shaped by hospitality, local memory and concern for others.
